The Media Orgy Will Commence in 3, 2,....

As of now the death toll stands at 22 at Virginia Tech. Stand by for the over-wrought, over-worked, microscopic introspection to follow. By tonight it will have its own graphics and theme music on the network news channels. By tomorrow morning there will be a parade of victim’s relatives being asked those oh-so insightful questions like “How do you feel?”. By this time tomorrow someone, somewhere, will find some way to blame the president. It’s doesn’t matter how obscure or out there the person is, they’ll get some variety of face time. The left will use this to advance a gun-control agenda. The right will use this to advance a family breakdown/we need more religion meme. And what will we as a society get out of all this theater and posturing? Nothing.

Some people will look at their lives and their relationships and make some changes. Of course the gun control folks will be frothing at the mouth. But very little attention will be given to the way the schools policy towards students who are "troubled" This young man had written a play that was so scary the teacher reported it and the man was refered to counciling. Despite all the talk about paxil dispensers and ads about antidepressants, it seems he didn't get help. At a local university my psychiatrist works with poor students and scrambles to get them samples for their pharmacutial needs. Depending on the school, there may not have been what he needed there.
The psychiatric medical system is very hard to deal with. You really have to want to get it. Perhaps this young man didn't get what he needed and this is the result.
I thank God for the drugs. I have insurance and a very easy to get to councilor.
Maybe our society will become more aware of mental illness out of this theater and posturing.
